Club, MRCFI send help to Typhoon Reming victims through Red Cross, initiate help drive among members
November ended not on wings of joyous song, as would have been fitting in the season of Advent, but on howling wind and driving rain, the kind that brings doom and gloom. Typhoon Reming was not tagged a super typhoon for nothing. Living up to its name, it packed 265-km. per hour winds that whipped the Bicol region, notably Albay, Catanduanes and Marinduque, leaving in its wake a swath of death and destruction beyond belief—our own Katrina, someone had aptly remarked. The images on TV and the morning papers were too gripping to ignore. Putting on its quick-response hat, the Rotary Club of Makati, together with its Makati Rotary Club Foundation Inc. (MRCFI), acted with dispatch. Pres. Conrad Marty and Pres. Jonny Carlos , representing the Club and the Foundation, respectively, immediately went to work. “The people are in dire need,” Pres. Jonny stressed, “and they need help now , not tomorrow, but now .” Convinced that the best way to send help immediately was to course it through an established institution that is in the business of providing assistance in times of disaster, they decided to tap the Philippine Red Cross. Last Tuesday, 5 December, Pres. Conrad and Pres. Jonny turned over a check for P100,000 to four Red Cross governors— Baby Ortiz, Mario Neri, Andrew Nocon and Miguel Zubiri —at the Market! Market! Activity Center , where PRC was launching a fund drive dubbed “143 Red Cross.” They specified that the donation be used to help the victims of Reming. Also present at the check turnover were PP Sid Garcia, Mon Diokno and Dir. Ferdie Ordoveza . At the same time the Club has kicked off a help drive for Legaspi City , which suffered the most because of Mayon's lahar flow that buried houses and people. The relief effort is in coordination with RC Legaspi West. As of press time the club had raised P76,000 in pledges made and checks sent in by : Frank Chavez, Romy Davila, Pilo Eugenio, Ai-Ai Galvez, Wilfred Gui, Tony Herbosa, PRID Paing Hechanova, Warner Manning, Bud Melvin, Reggie Nolido and PP Charlie Ru fino . Pres Conrad, PP Jonny, Tony Herbosa and PP Rene Paras sent clothes, shoes and other stuff, while PP Freddie Borromeo & Ann Jojo sent boxes of canned goods. On behalf of the victims of Reming, we thank them for their donations—in cash, in kind and in kindness. Everyone is enjoined to pitch in. Please call 8192966-68 for your pledges (to be charged to your account) or send donations to the Secretariat, 410 MileLong Bldg., corner Rufino & Amorsolo in Legaspi Village . |
