RC Makati steps up Stop TB Campaign
The Rotary Club of Makati's TB Eradication Committee chaired by PP Puno Peña is making good its commitment to contribute in a significant way to the national effort to wipe out tuberculosis from the country's list of major health issues. This it does by sponsoring the prescribed 6-month medical treatment of patients in selected communities. In cases where the patients are pre-school children, the TB medication program is reinforced by supplemental feeding provided by the club's Family Health and Nutrition Program chaired by PP Freddie Borromeo . On the 27 th of August, 3 modules of the Stop TB Program were launched in Quezon City for 100 young TB patients—40 in Brgy. Valencia , 35 in Brgy. Bagong Lipunan Crame, and 25 in Brgy. Horseshoe. Held at the Brgy. Horseshoe Kalusugan Health Center , the project is being implemented in partnership with Kabisig ng Kalahi and the concerned LGU. The club and Kabisig have also joined hands with RC Makati Bel-Air and Gawad Kalinga Welfareville in Mandaluyong for another Stop TB module, which was launched on the 28 th of August. This module covers 55 children suffering from primary complex. In both cases, a memorandum of agreement was signed by the project partners, and the club turned over the TB medicines to the barangay health center officials who are responsible for seeing to it that the patients take the prescribed medicines every day, religiously, for 6 months. The club provides the medicines for the program. Also on August 28, PP Puno Peña attended the annual convention of the Philippine Coalition Against TB at the Plaza Galleria in Pasig City to keep abreast of the latest developments on various aspects of the disease. Keynoted by Health Sec. Francisco Duque , the convention brought together a large group of doctors for a series of symposia on TB control and management, resource mobilization, surgical options, updates on the national TB program, new TB diagnostics and drugs, and the Directly Observed Therapy-Short Course method of medication, among other topics. Among the other speakers were Dr. Michael Voniatis of the World Health Organization and Dr. Thelma Tupasi of Makati Medical Center and the Tropical Disease Foundation. |
