RC Makati's Heather Kinross Center starts 2nd Training Program for GK Villa Paraiso

The Heather Kinross Center , the skills training arm of the Rotary Club of Makati, has kicked off the Training Program in Metal Arc Welding for the second batch of trainees from the Club's adopted Gawad Kalinga community in Villa Paraiso, Parañaque City . Classes started last Monday, 1 st September, at the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Village (TDBV) in Alabang. The training program, the cost if which is underwritten by the club, is being jointly implemented by the Club's Heather Kinross Center (HKC) and the Tuloy Foundation, Inc. (TFI). It aims to equip the trainees with competent skills in basic metal arc welding to eventually qualify them for jobs. At the helm of the HKC is chairman Dean Velasco , while the Tuloy sa Don Bosco is run by Fr. Rocky Evangelista .

The training program runs for three months, with the graduation set for mid December to allow for holidays and possible disruption of classes due to typhoons and heavy rains. The trainees attend classes five days a week, Monday to Friday. For best results, the maximum number of trainees per batch has been pegged at 25.

Per program design, the trainees are to take lessons on the principles of welding and undergo actual training in metal arc welding under experienced TFI trainers. The course also includes values formation as an integral part of the program. As training sponsor, the club also provides transport allowance to the trainees. But their families are to provide their snacks and shoulder the cost of the pre-OJT medical checkup and, for those who make the grade, the TESDA accreditation fee. This requirement for families to share the financial responsibility for their children's training is meant to discourage overdependence on dole-outs. The trainees, together with their parents, attended an orientation session on the 23 rd of August at the GK Villa Paraiso multipurpose hall, where they were apprised of the course offering and requirements, as well as what is expected of them. The parents were made aware of the importance of giving support to their children to enable them to focus on the training and make the most it.
