1st batch of public school principals finish RCM-Ateneo PEP training program
The first batch of public school principals who participated in the Principal Empowerment Program (PEP) received their certificates of completion in simple closing ceremonies at the Ateneo Grade School Auditorium on the 13 th of April. In attendance for the club were Pres. Pepito Bengzon, PP Jonny Carlos , in his capacity as MRCFI president, and Francis Macatulad , chairman of the Public School Teacher Training Program (PSTTP)now named after his father, PP Ever, who conceived and initiated the project during his term in 1995-1996. The PEP, an off-shoot of the PSTTP, aims to arm public school principals with instructional skills to improve the standard of education in the public school system which, according to recent studies, has been on a steady decline. Like the Teacher Training Program, the PEP is run by the Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED). The Club and MRCFI are funding partners in both the TTP and the PEP, as well as in a new program, the Educational Software Module (ESM) Workshop in Filipino and Aralin Panlipunan (Social Studies). Ms. Carmela Oracion , ACED managing director, delivered the invocation, while Fr. Bienvenido Nebres , Ateneo President, handed the certificates of completion to the participants and delivered the closing remarks. He also awarded plaques of appreciation to RC Makati and MRCFI, represented by Pres. Pepito and PP Jonny, respectively. In his response, Pres. Pepito spoke of RCM's community and vocational service projects, with emphasis on literacy. He explained that the Teacher Training Program was actually initiated in 1997 by the club, with Ateneo as its partner, to improve instruction in English, Math and Science in the public schools, adding that the club is also now sponsoring the PEP, which was launched in 2007, and the ESM. He reiterated the club's commitment to support the ACED programs as a manifestation of the ideal of ‘Service Above Self,' Rotary's answer to Ateneo's ‘Man for Others' credo. Four Dep-Ed divisions participated in both the PEP and ESM workshop— Marikina City , Muntinlupa City , Quezon City and Taguig/Pateros.
