Club 'makes the day' for some 1,600 children through Last Angel Gift Giving Project
Christmas, we're told, is for the children. Since it is the celebration of the birth of a child, the Holy Child Jesus, it is but fitting that the focus be on the children. Give them top-of-mind attention. Make them happy. And yes, bring them presents, just as the Magi did the Holy Infant. Alas, not every child is so blessed. There are kids who go through Christmas year after year, without ever knowing what how it feels to unwrap a gift; they have never received a present in their lives. These are the children who dare not make a wish nor write a letter to Santa. What for? Santa isn't real; Santa can't be real. They are the children for whom the Last Angel Project was conceived. Fortunately for 1,327 young boys and girls, there was a Santa Claus last Christmas, as there has been for similarly-situated children since the inception of the Last Angel project by Ann Brin Panlilio in November 1998. Not just one Santa, but a number of them, who came not ho-ho-ho-ing but smiling their way to the children's hearts—the Rotary Anns of RC Makati, leading lights of the club's heart-tugging Last Angel gift-giving project; the Anns who played Santa, with all the good cheer of the season, for the children whose Christmas may not be as merry as it should be. Chit Marty , this year's project chairperson, and Nellie Bengzon , overall co-chairperson of the Christmas Bazaar from which the Last Angel Project sprung, did all they could to reach as many kids as their resources would permit. They brought gifts to about 1,600 bright-eyed kids in 3 institutions, several Gawad Kalinga sites and communities in Parañaque, Muntinlupa, Makati , Batangas and Laguna. Once again Bud Melvin slipped into his Christmas attire to play Santa and hand out crisp P100 bills to the Bantay Bata kids at Makati City Hall, Bahay Maria in Bel-Air Village and Asilo de San Vicente de Paul. Ann Jojo Borromeo donated the gifts for Bahay Maria. At the Makati City Hall , Mayor Jojo Binay joined the Bantay Bata wards, together Bantay Bata chairman Frank Chavez & Ann Jean. TereBoyer was a fixture in the Makati/Manila outings, as Terry Tambunting was in those in Parañaque. PP Joe Alejandro & Ann Marilou and Vice Mayor Gus Tambunting also joined them in some sites in Parañaque. PP Freddie Borromeo & Ann Jojo presided over the gift-giving in Calatagan and San Pablo City , joined in the latter site by Dir. Peter Manzano & Ann Pam, Wash Lou and Melanie Laggui , while Lu Limjoco went solo in another Parañaque site. But most of the load rested squarely on Ann Chit Marty's back. As project chairperson she led the gift-giving in most of the sites and, assisted by project coordinator Eden Noche , had braved the horrible vehicular traffic on the way to Divisoria and the energy-sapping surge of human traffic at the 168 mall, to personally shop for the gifts, a feat that often requires the stamina of an athlete and the patience of a saint. For her part Nellie Bengzon was very much there as well. Present at 11 sites, she even handed out rosaries to the mothers in Camia St. , Guadalupe Viejo.
